Some of my favorite comedians would have to be Dave Chappelle and Bo Burnham. Comedians like these make a living off of making people laugh by making jokes about the flaws of human nature, behavior, and stereotypes. I believe their main goal is to make people laugh while also exposing some sort of actual truth to what they say. I think this style of comedy is so popular because it breaks this barrier of discomfort people may have about certain topics by making them humorous. Humans tend to be very hostile at times when touchy subjects are discussed but when humor is thrown into the mix it lightens the mood.
I have not heard of either of these comedians. I agree with you that comedians' main goal is to make people laugh while also having meaning behind the comedy.
